This two day buggy tour will start off from Reykjavík. We will begin by making a short stop at Buggy Adventures base camp to select your buggy gear for the next two days. Once you are all geared up, we will drive you to Þingvellir national park, which is the starting and ending point of your adventure.
Driving through highland roads, sandy deserts, lava fields and rivers, you will experience stunning sights like nowhere else! As you drive in a circle around the second largest glacier in Europe, Langjökull glacier, you will witness landscapes you have never seen before. The main highlights of this tour include Skjaldbreiður shield volcano and Hlöðufell table top volcano, which was formed when a volcanic eruption happened under Langjökull glacier, thousands of years ago.
We will also drive Kjölur road, with the massive glacier on our left hand side, en route to the wonderful geothermal areas of Kerlingarfjöll and Hveravellir. Kerlingarfjöll boasts of many hot springs and rivulets in the area and the minerals of the earth have colored the ground red, yellow, green and several shades of brown. Truly a magnificent sight! If your legs are stiff from a long day of buggy driving, this is an excellent location to take a scenic hike. The area offers several good hiking paths of various difficulty and length.
Hveravellir is where we will spend the night in a mountain hut of the highest standard. Hveravellir is strewn with hot springs and fumaroles and you can even go for a bath in the cooled down geothermal water. What better way to end a full day of buggy and hiking?
We will head a little further north before we turn west through Arnarvatnsheiði mountain road. This is a rough road, with rivers and streams to cross, so the ride will be bumpy. As we get to the deepest river, we will have to inspect the ford very carefully before we attempt to cross. If the guides feel it is unsafe, we will turn around and explore the Kjölur route again. Your safety has to come first!
If the ford is safe to cross, we will continue on until we reach Borgarfjörður district. We will be driving through lava and sand, but the area is also covered with little lakes and streams. The area has many hidden caves and lava tunnels, some accessible to humans, but others are not. The largest of the accessible caves would be Surtshellir, over a mile in length.
On a good and clear day, you will have a view of two glaciers; Langjökull glacier, which will have been on your side the whole trip, and Eiríksjökull glacier. As we drive past the glaciers, we will follow Kaldidalur highland road, headed south towards Þingvellir where you will conclude your once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
